At today’s work session, the Orange County School Board reviewed the district’s early reading instruction and intervention practices. During the rule development workshop, board members discussed policies related to instructional and library materials.

In the work session, Curriculum and Digital Learning leaders provided the board with an overview of the reading instruction and intervention practices being utilized throughout the district. Using the Science of Reading research, OCPS has a structured literacy approach that focuses on evidence-based tiered instruction.

The rule development workshop reviewed changes to the policies being revised to include language from enacted laws and Florida Department of Education requirements, as well as the clarification of the process by which a parent or a resident of the county can object to the Board’s adoption of instructional materials and/or request reconsideration of library materials already in use.

Revisions to the existing policy language include content, formatting, and terminology edits consistent with statutory language.
