Legislative Update, Jan. 24-28, 2022
Posted on 01/31/2022
Overview
The Florida Legislature completed the third week of its 60-day Legislative Session. Bills related to education continue to feature prominently (see Bill Activity below).

A bill that would end the Florida Standards Assessments in public schools and replace them with a computer-based “progress monitoring” system continues to advance in the Senate.  The Senate Education Appropriations Subcommittee unanimously approved the bill (SB 1048) on Wednesday. Under the bill, starting in the 2022-23 school year, students in grades 3 through 10 would be administered progress-monitoring tests in English Language Arts three times a year under the bill. Math assessments for grades 3 through 8 would also be given to students at the beginning, middle, and end of each school year.

The Senate Education Committee approved a proposal (SB 1300) to limit school board pay to what state legislators are paid (currently $29,697). The bill also provides specific requirements for school districts in selecting instructional materials and materials used in school libraries and media centers.

Separately, Florida voters will not have a chance to decide whether to legalize sports betting after supporters of a proposed constitutional amendment acknowledged Friday they lack the required signatures to make it on the 2022 ballot. A political committee sponsoring the sports-betting measure, had until Feb. 1 to submit nearly 900,000 valid signatures to place the proposal on the November ballot. The proposal would have steered tax revenues from sports betting toward the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund to supplement public school funding.
